To Il Castello + L'Arco in San Mamiliano
Remember that Laurie may not be able to meet you with the keys before 2.00 pm (Monday – Saturday), since cleaning may still be taking place, or, 4.00 pm (Sunday), since we are out for lunch between 12.30 pm – 4.00 pm (the great Italian tradition!).However, should you be in the area earlier, it is worth giving Laurie a ring just in case the cleaning has finished or we happen not to be at lunch, and, then, you can arrive earlier. Also, on the day of your departure (sorry to talk about your leaving before you’ve even arrived!), you should leave by 10.00 am so that the cleaning can commence.
LAURIE’S NUMBER IS : (0039) 349 739 3501
We have many guests arriving and departing on a daily basis so, in order that you and Laurie are not kept waiting for each other, it makes life so much easier if Laurie can arrange to be waiting for you at a specific time. Otherwise, you risk being kept waiting if Laurie is elsewhere meeting other guests.
So, please phone us on (0039) 349 739 3501 just after you have come through the toll at Orte. Laurie will then be able to estimate your time of arrival at San Mamiliano more precisely. Usually, we would expect you to arrive between 2 – 4 pm (Mon – Sat) or from 4 pm onwards (Sun); but, if you have emailed me in advance to say you will be later, then, that’s fine and we will expect your phone call according to the information you have given me on the email.
In the event of a breakdown in communication and, in circumstances where you have already arrived in San Mamiliano, please try to contact Gail (the 1st house in front of you – a little to the left and through the archway to San Mamiliano. Obviously, you should try to contact Laurie on (0039) 349 739 3501. And, if you can’t get through to him, then, phone me on (0039) 349 355 4556 for reassurance that Laurie is trying to get to you or to advise me that you are there so that I can tell Laurie on your behalf. It maybe that the key is already in the door – just make sure you enter the right house as all the San Mamilianese tend to leave keys in their doors ! Having entered, you will recognise the interior from the photos. But, you should still try to contact Laurie as he will only arrive if he knows you are on your way or, indeed, have already arrived. And, if we don’t hear from you, we will worry about you !

How to recognise L’Arco :
From the piazza at San Mamiliano, walk through the arched entrance to the village. There is a tiny cobbled lane in front of you that goes up-hill. Walk up it a few paces and in front of you there is an arch. Go under the arch and immediately you emerge from the arch on the other side, directly to your right, is another arch and some steps leading down to L’Arco, which is at the bottom with the door facing you.

BY CAR FROM ROME TO SAN MAMILIANO
2, Via di Mezza, San Mamiliano, Ferentillo (TR), Cap 05034, Umbria, Italia
From either of the Rome airports, make your way to the A1, following the signs to Firenze (Florence).
Drive carefully, making sure that you observe every sign because following the A1 signs to Firenze (Florence) will ensure you are heading straight for us.
You will need to have some Euros available because part of the journey is on a toll road.
You leave the A1 at ORTE (please phone Laurie when you have passed through the toll). Now follow the sign-post to TERNI and SPOLETO.
Keep on this dual carriage-way, passing all the sign-posts to TERNI and following the road straight on towards SPOLETO.
After about 25 mins driving, the road becomes a single carriage-way and starts to climb steeply.
You pass a ristorante on your left called IL CAMINO.
Now, drive slowly and look out for a sign on your right to MONTEFRANCO and RIETI. TAKE THIS ROAD.
After turning right, you will soon pass a turning on your left that says Machialungo (can't spell it!) and San Mamiliano. Do NOT take this road.
Continue until you reach a cross-roads at the top of the hill.
Turn a VERY sharp left into a road sign-posted San Mamiliano (the right turn is to Collestate and straight on is to Montefranco).
Now drive for 5 mins until you arrive in the piazza which is San Mamiliano.
Ask anyone for the house of Norma and Laurie (casa di Norma e Lorenzo!) and they will show you where our apartments are. If no-body is about, enter the village through an arch from the piazza. Follow the path under another arch. On the right, you will see a small balcony – next door to this balcony is the main entrance to our house (double wooden doors) ie Il Castello. However, L’Arco is the apartment at the bottom of a tiny alley just before the balcony under another arch on your right as you are looking up the street. This tiny alley has a patio/garden at the bottom where there are 2 doorways. One doorway that is on the side (the double wooden doors) is the ground-floor entrance to Il Castello, which is kept permanently locked. The other doorway (the smaller double wooden doors), facing you and up 3 steps, once you reach the bottom of the alley, is the entrance to L’Arco.

BY CAR FROM PERUGIA TO SPOLETO:
Follow the signs to Foligno.
When you come off the dual carriage way, take the 1st turning, sign-posted, Spoleto.
On the slip road (exit road), you will find a huge supermarket called, Conad. Park in front of the main entrance and telephone Laurie to let him know you have arrived.
If you have no mobile, you will need to go to Spoleto train station to find a public telephone or try the bar called, Il Pavone, which is diagonally across the road from Conad.
Laurie’s mobile number is : (0039) 349 739 3501 If he doesn’t answer straightaway, keep trying as he may have left his mobile somewhere for a moment or he may be travelling through mountains and temporarily lost the signal.
When Laurie meets up with you, he will escort you to San Mamiliano.
In the event of not being able to get through to Laurie on his mobile, ring me on (0039) 349 355 4556; but, only do this if you have really tried and failed to get through to Laurie as I will probably not know his whereabouts either and will not be able to meet you as I haven’t got a car. However, you can leave a message with me and I will try to communicate with him also, on your behalf. Clearly, though, it is best that you are able to contact Laurie directly. And, should he have disappeared off the face of the earth (god forbid!), then, we will have to think together about this new situation ! To date, this has not happened…..and, I trust it never will !

PLEASE NOTE FOR THOSE WITH GPS, THE ADDRESS OF CONAD IS – THIS IS THEIR ONLY OFFICIAL ADDRESS :
LA TORRE
CONAD SUPERSTORE
SPOLETO
VIA FLAMINIA VECHHIA
ARE YOU TRAVELLING TO SPOLETO BY TRAIN AND HIRING A CAR LOCALLY?
If you book your car through the local Avis car-hire office and follow the instructions I outlined in earlier information I gave you, then, either Avis will send a car to take you to their office or, they will deliver a car to you at Spoleto station at the time you have arranged with them. This free taxi service does not apply if you have booked through the central Avis office.
So, please phone Laurie on (0039) 349 739 3501 about an hour or so before you think you will be arriving either at the Avis office to pick up your car or at Spoleto station – the Avis office is just a few minutes from the station. Laurie will meet you at an arranged time either at the Avis office or at Spoleto station – wherever it is you are picking up the car. He will then escort you to your apartment.
Alternatively, email me with the precise arrival time of your train and the arrangements you have made re your car-hire and, then, Laurie will meet you when and where you advise him to do so. Then, you need phone Laurie only if you think you may be delayed – though we do appreciate a phone-call in any case, if you can.
Should Laurie be delayed and not be at the station or the car-hire office when you arrive – whichever place you have told him to be - (he will find you if he is there and he drives a dark red Peugeot Estate car), then, please just stay put. And, if you are delayed but can't communicate this to Laurie for any reason, then, please do the same ie just stay at the station or the car-hire office and wait since he will keep returning to check for your arrival, should you fail to be where he is expecting you to be. And, if you can, phone him to ensure that there has been no misunderstanding.
So, the main rule of thumb to remember if all else fails is to stay put wherever you have advised him to meet you. However, please rest assured that it is usually the case that everything goes smoothly !
My number in an emergency is (0039) 349 355 4556. However, only use this number if all else has failed since I won’t be able to pick you up and won’t know of Laurie’s whereabouts. However, I will be able to reassure that all is well and that he is just delayed. And, I should be able to get a message to him, if you are delayed.
So, we look forward to welcoming you to Spoleto and, then, San Mamiliano !
We wish you a safe and enjoyable journey.
NOTE : ALWAYS PHONE THE MOBILE (0039) 349 739 3501 IF YOU WISH TO GET US QUICKLY
Buon Viaggio !
